FORMAT International Photography Festival was established in 2004 and is the UK’s leading international contemporary festival of photography and related media, bringing the very best contemporary photography and lens-based media to the UK, by artists from across the globe.   For the eleventh occasion of the biennial festival, the FORMAT23 theme centres around the intentionally open presentation of ‘what photography can be’. Building on, exploring and developing the concept of ‘open’ provided us the foundation of the festival identity, seen in the ‘open’ logo and extended through to the typographic treatment throughout. The implementation of ‘open’ to the festival catalogue sees loose leaves held together with a red elastic band allowing the pages to be interchangeable, the pagination purposefully left off. The FORMAT23 festival identity was developed across supporting literature, social media awareness, education guides, and exhibition graphics in venues across Derby city centre.
